Digital nomads living the remote work lifestyle should be prepared for emergencies while on the road just like they were living at home.
Recently, MarketWatch Guides reviewed the number of insurance programs available to protect digital nomads as they travel on their adventures and came up with a list of five top rates ones to consider for their journeys.
World Nomads Explorer Plan
The World Nomads Explorer Plan ranked top for digital nomads who like a sense of adventure and want to make sure they are covered and protected.
The pretty comprehensive plan covers 150 different adventure activities including skydiving, paragliding, bungee jumping and more.
The policy lasts for an initial 180 days at the average price of $669 and will require purchases of six-month extensions if needed. Nomads can even purchase a policy post-departure.
The plan offers $100,000 emergency medical coverage and $500,000 for emergency evacuations. A small amount of coverage for lost gear is also included in the plan.
Travelex Travel Select
Meanwhile, the team at MarketWatch selected the Travelex Travel Select for more budget oriented digital nomads.
The coverage lasts for a year and includes popular add-on coverages for adventure sports, car rental collision coverage and medical expenses. It even covers nomads with kids under the age of 17.
The average annual cost is only $441 and includes $50,000 emergency medical expense coverage and $500,000 for medical evacuations.
Digital nomads can even qualify for a pre-existing condition waiver if purchased within 15 days of the initial trip payment.
International Medical Group Patriot International Platinum
This digital nomad travel insurance plan was rated best for medical needs. Long term nomads might want to consider this plan as it provides coverage for up to 36 months.
It extends up to $8 million in coverage at an average annual price of $684.
International Medical Group does offer add-ons for accidental death and dismemberment and even action sports.
A pre-existing waiver is available, although it is limited by the age of the policy holder.
What Digital Nomads Need to Know
With more and more countries requiring digital nomads to have travel insurance in place in order to even apply for the visa, it’s important to know the options available based on coverage and cost of the insurance.
While MarketWatch Guides did not detail their review process, nor the number of insurance companies and policies they reviewed, it does give digital nomads a starting point in the process.
It’s important for remote global workers to do their own due diligence and take their own health and personal situations into consideration before purchasing any travel insurance policy for their own protection.
The worst thing would be to need the protection provided by travel insurance policies without actually having one. Better safety then sorry when pursuing your dream digital nomad experiences around the world while remote working!
