Winter is right around the corner and for many digital nomads, it’s time to avoid the cold and head somewhere warmer.
While it might be tempting for those up north to dip below the equator to enjoy the summer season, here are five options for digital nomads to consider with warmer weather maybe a little closer to home.
Paphos, Cyprus
The transition from a Mediterranean summer may be easier for digital nomads getting away to the island of Cyprus. Temperatures from 55 to 66 degrees await travelers along with fascinating archaeological sites, sunny beaches and a scenic harbor to walk.
An Airbnb in Paphos will set digital nomads back about $2,679/month. Meanwhile, a one-bedroom city center apartment is $816/month.
The average internet speed is about 14Mbps. However, it may be faster for nomads to connect at convenient co-working spaces dotted around town.
Athens, Greece
Instead, how about a big fat Greek nomad getaway to Athens. Maybe not the warmest spot on the list, it does not get much better than Athens when it comes to great food and plenty of tourist attractions and beaches.
While only 48 to 61 degrees in the winter, it definitely beats shoveling out snow up north. It’s also pretty affordable with an Airbnb at $1,827/month and a one-bedroom city center studio averaging $430/month.
Internet speeds are good at 43 Mbps and there are plenty of co-working places for digital nomads to connect. Popular spots include The Cube and Impact Hub.
Sliema, Malta
How about enjoying the island life on the island of Malta? It’s a slower pace of life and laid-back lifestyle that greet digital nomads to Sliema on the country’s North Coast.
Winter temperatures hover around 54 to 68 degrees and there’s plenty of sunshine to go around. Tourists can enjoy a ferry getaway to the island of Gozo or even explore the capital city of Valletta.
Nomads will find Airbnbs available for $1,978/month and one-bedroom city center studios at $784/month.
The internet speed is a little on the slower side at 21 Mbps. But hey, it goes well with the slower pace of life on Malta.
Madeira and Lisbon, Portugal
The land of eternal Spring is not too shabby in the winter. Madeira is a cool place (literally!) to spend a winter escaping the bitter Northern European cold.
It’s about 59 to 68 degrees during the winter and Madeira not only boasts some picturesque landscape, but also a hip emerging foodie scene just perfect for digital nomads.
The average internet speed comes in at 55 Mbps, but faster speeds can be found at some great co-networking spots in the city. Be sure to check out the Ponta do Sol Digital Nomad Village.
Airbnbs are pretty pricy due to other tourists also trying to escape the cold, costing $2,309/month. Meanwhile, a one-bedroom city center apartment looks like a deal at only $658/month.
How about heading to Portugal’s capital for an escape from old man winter? With a sunny climate, good food, plenty to do and good internet access, it may just be the place. Also, Lisbon has one the biggest digital nomads communities worldwide.
Again, this corner of Portugal is a little high for digital nomads looking for affordable rents. An Airbnb is about $2,609/month or a one-bedroom city center apartment is about $1,366 month.
Pleasant winter temperatures in the range of 50 to 60 degrees and an average internet speed of 71 Mbps may just made nomads productive enough to offset the high cost of an apartment.
Valencia and Gran Canaria, Spain
Ah, the allure of sunny Spain for digital nomads! We end our review of warm European digital nomads with the last country on the Iberian peninsula.
With a range of 50 to 64 degrees, Valencia is a cool, but not real cold, winter nomad destination. It’s got a growing tech scene to help digital nomads feel right at home and an average internet speed of 78 Mbps to boot.
Soaking up the sun will cost nomads $2,172/month for an Airbnb or about $898/month for a one-bedroom city center suite.
