This Spanish paradise has set aside €2 million to encourage digital nomads in the tech sector to relocate to the region for a two-year period.
Throughout 2024, numerous Spanish cities have seen growing protests against the presence of tourists and digital nomads, due to a series of concerns associated with these demographics. However, not all regions share such sentiment and instead of protesting, they are paying digital nomads to relocate there.
In today’s case, we want to introduce a region that is actually offering thousands of euros to attract remote workers. This place is, of course, Extremadura.
Located in western Spain, bordering Portugal and nestled between Castilla y León and Andalusia, this natural gem is known for its well-preserved medieval towns, stunning mountainous landscapes and authentic Spanish charm.
With only 26 inhabitants per square kilometer, Extremadura has the lowest population density in the country, which has prompted the local government to offer these financial incentives to attract new residents.
Benefits
First and foremost, let’s clarify a key detail to avoid any misunderstandings: the monetary benefits in the scheme are not equal for men and women.
In this case, women receive a few more thousand euros than their male counterparts—an approach that may raise eyebrows, but that’s simply how the scheme was designed and how Spaniards see the world. Their money, their rules.
Successful female applicants, regardless of age, and men under 30 years old will be granted €10,000 upfront. Meanwhile, men older than 30 years old will start with €8,000.
After two years of living in the region, women of any age, and men under 30 will receive an additional €5,000, provided that they continue living in Extremadura for another year.
Meanwhile (again), men over 30 who also wish to extend their residence for another year will receive $4,000 more.
Non-EU citizens must first obtain a legal identification number to begin the process.
This is essentially a first-come, first-served program, so funds will be distributed among digital nomads until the €2 million runs out.
I’m a Digital Nomad—Is that Enough to Participate in This Scheme?

Well, not everyone is invited to this party.
To be eligible, you’ll need to prove your expertise as a high-skilled professional in the tech sector, as the government’s primary goal is to boost the local economy by attracting this specific demographic into the community.
Why You Should Choose Extremadura As Your Next Base of Operations
While the opportunity to receive up to €15,000 to boost your business is certainly enticing, Extremadura’s breathtaking geography and welcoming atmosphere also make it an appealing option to many remote workers.
“Extremadura offers a high quality of life. It is a natural paradise with exceptional gastronomy. Attracting these high-skilled professionals with international incomes will have a very positive impact on our economy. They will boost local consumption, enrich regional talent and create significant networks and opportunities,” said Guillermo Santamaría, Minister of Economy, Employment and Digital Transformation.
Although the transport system in this autonomous community is not as developed as in other Spanish regions, fiber optic coverage reaches 93% surpassing the national average and providing outstanding connectivity to digital nomads.
Finally, Spain offers non-Eu citizens one of the best digital nomads visas in the world, thanks to its attractive tax incentives and low-income requirements.
